The weaponized justice system is Donald Trump’s top opponent in the 2024 election.
But Trump isn’t fighting back on his own.
And now Donald Trump gained this unexpected ally in a fight against Democrat prosecutors.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) used to be a principled organization that defended the right to free speech no matter which side of the aisle faced government censorship.
“I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll fight for your right to say it” was the calling card for the traditional civil libertarian ethos exemplified by the ACLU.
But the ACLU morphed into a standard left-wing interest group during the Trump years.
However, it looks like that may be changing for the better.
The ACLU filed an amicus brief to Donald Trump’s appeal of an unconstitutional gag order placed on him by Democrat Judge Tanya Chutkan at the request of Joe Biden prosecutor Jack Smith.
In its brief, the ACLU nodded to its left-wing donor base and attacked Trump for the content of his remarks.
“Former President, and now Defendant, Donald Trump has said many things,” the ACLU wrote. “Much that he has said has been patently false and has caused great harm to countless individuals, as well as to the Republic itself. Some of his words and actions have led him to this criminal indictment, which alleges grave wrongdoing in contempt of the peaceful transition of power.”
But just because Democrats don’t like what Trump has to say doesn’t mean he loses his right to say it.
“But Trump retains a First Amendment right to speak, and the rest of us retain a right to hear what he has to say,” the ACLU brief added.
Donald Trump’s status as the Republican frontrunner also complicates this case.
The Biden administration is asking a Democrat Judge to micromanage the speech of the sitting President’s chief rival in a case where some of Trump’s political opponents are making the charges against him for contesting the 2020 election the centerpiece of their campaign message.
This gag order would allow Biden and Trump’s GOP challengers to attack him over this case while limiting his ability to respond.
A Democrat judge and prosecutor muzzling a leading Presidential candidate is an unprecedented assault on the First Amendment and democracy.
Even left-wing activist groups understand that is the case.
