Donald Trump continues to build momentum in the GOP Presidential Primary.
Attention is turning toward the General Election against Joe Biden.
And Donald Trump is looking at this surprising Republican to be his Vice President.
Florida Congressman Byron Donalds made waves when he endorsed Donald Trump’s reelection bid instead of backing his home state Governor, Ron DeSantis, in his attempt to run for President.
Donalds made a name for himself as one of the 20 conservatives who opposed Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House, and he even served as the alternative to McCarthy in that race.
The second-term Congressman is a strong supporter of the America First agenda, and his growing national profile led many to suggest that Trump could pick him as his running mate in 2024.
Fox News host Maria Bartiromo pressed Donalds about conservatives voting for him to be Speaker of the House and the possibility of joining Trump on the ticket.
“Congressman, I want to switch gears real quick. Ask you about 2024, because I know some people would have liked to see you get the gavel and become Speaker, but others say, well, maybe you have a different road ahead. Would you accept the Vice President position if Donald Trump asked you to be his partner?” Bartiromo asked Donalds.
Donalds praised new Speaker Mike Johnson but did not deny any interest in being Trump’s running mate, instead saying that decision was up to Trump.
“Well, look, Maria, first of all, I’ll tell you first, Speaker Mike Johnson, I am happy for him. He’s going to do a tremendous job leading the House of Representatives. You have a man of impeccable character, impeccable integrity, and the members have rallied around him. We’re going to get back to work and do our jobs with respect to being potentially on the ticket. That’s really up to the President. I have no control over that. The only thing I’ll say is I just want to do whatever I can to get our country on track. That’s what I’ve always been committed to. So no matter what the role is, it’s about getting our country back on track,” Donalds stated.
Normally, no one actively pursues the position of Vice President because no one wants to look bad if they campaign for a job they ultimately do not get selected for.
Conservatives would want to see someone like Donalds get the nod and would hope Trump would avoid establishment RINOs like Nikki Haley or Tim Scott.
And the infighting in the GOP to be on Trump’s ticket may be more cutthroat than usual due to that reality.
That’s because Donald Trump’s Vice President makes that person the heir to his movement and the instant frontrunner in 2028, as Trump can only serve one term in office.
