Donald Trump sits in first place in the polls.
But it may not be all smooth sailing ahead.
And Kayleigh McEnany revealed the major risk Donald Trump is taking in 2024.
On a recent episode of Fox News Channel’s Outnumbered, McEnany – who served as Trump’s final White House Press Secretary and who also appears to favor Ron DeSantis in 2024 – reacted to Trump posting on Truth Social that he would skip all GOP debates because of his 40-point lead in the Primary polls.
“The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had, with Energy Independence, Strong Borders & Military, Biggest EVER Tax & Regulation Cuts, No Inflation, Strongest Economy in History & much more. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!” Trump posted.
McEnany called Trump’s passing on the debates a “huge political miscalculation.”
Her reasoning was that the other candidates were just going to attack Trump for two hours regardless and that his absence could give someone else a chance to stage a breakout moment.
“The takeaway from that is this is a huge political miscalculation, I would say, for him,” McEnany claimed. “You give others the opportunity to shine. You give others two hours to throw lobs at you. I know former President Trump can dance across the debate stage and can defend himself. But you’re not there to do it yourself, you’re counting on maybe others to step in.”
McEnany also argued that Trump not attending the debates was the “biggest strategic risk” of the 2024 election, as it could provide Joe Biden with an excuse not to debate him if they match up next fall.
Joe Biden rarely does solo press conferences because his handlers do not trust him to answer unscripted questions.
That’s why when Biden does stage his few press conferences, they are highly scripted and his staff provides him a sheet with a list of reporters to call on in order.
They also provide him with a cheat sheet full of answers he should give to the questions, which many believe the friendly reporters submit in advance as a precondition of getting called on.
Joe Biden will have none of that help in a Presidential debate against Donald Trump.
And there are conservatives who worry that Trump skipping the debates will allow Biden to return the favor.
