Megyn Kelly interviewed Donald Trump for the first time in seven years.
Trump and Kelly were archenemies during the 2016 election.
And Megyn Kelly revealed the one surprising truth she discovered about Donald Trump.
After Kelly interviewed Trump on her podcast, she appeared on Eric Bolling’s Newsmax show to offer her analysis on the encounter.
Kelly admitted that Trump would never get over the fact that she led off the contest at the first GOP debate in 2015 by asking him about comments where he called women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.”
Trump viewed the question as a purposeful effort by Fox News to destroy his candidacy and later skipped a debate on the eve of the Iowa Caucus because Fox News selected Kelly as the moderator.
Kelly said while there will always be tension between the two, she still believes they respect one another.
“Anyway, it’s a little complicated, but I think we both respect each other,” Kelly began. “Kind of like two silverback gorillas, right?”
Kelly said she believed that the friction between the two made for good television, as the tension kept everyone on edge since Trump knew she would ask tough questions.
She said Trump was also willing to answer anything.
“He knows, even though I like him, I have to ask him tough questions because that’s my job, and I know that even though he’s inclined to like me, he’s still ticked off about that debate question. So there’s a little friction behind our relationship, and I think it works on television, frankly. It’s a dynamic that works, and so at times it got a little contentious, but overall, I think we have a begrudging respect for one another. And as you know, as a journalist, I’ll take it. I’d much rather people respect me than love me, I’m not a politician, so that’s the game I’m in, and he did fine,” Kelly added.
Kelly admitted the two would never be friends but said Trump knew she was not coming from an adversarial place when she interviewed him.
“I think we’re just in a better place. I mean, I think he’s never totally gonna forgive me because of the question. I don’t feel I have anything to apologize for, but I think he recognizes that, notwithstanding all that went on between us, that I have been very fair to him, and uh, while I’m not a sycophant for him or anybody else, I’m in the business of holding politicians to account, not pushing for them, not advocating for them. That’s not my role, it shouldn’t be anybody’s role who’s a journalist. He understands I don’t hate him, I don’t suffer from Trump derangement syndrome,” Kelly added.
Kelly’s interview with Trump and other politicians should serve as a model for all journalists.
In her interviews, Kelly asks tough but respectful questions her audience cares about.
Kelly doesn’t try to preen or get confrontation to win plaudits from her peers in the press.
And Kelly’s been rewarded with a growing audience that ranks her podcast in the top five most listened to in conservative media.
