Mitt Romney once described himself as “severely conservative.”
But nowadays it seems he has a hard time finding a conservative he can support.
And Mitt Romney was just sent to the corner for a timeout by Donald Trump for not being a team player.
Trump vs. Romney
The last two GOP nominees for President were Mitt Romney in 2012 and Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.
Romney lost in embarrassing fashion to Barack Obama in 2012.
Trump soundly defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016 and then lost to Joe Biden in 2020.
The two have never got along, with Romney constantly being a thorn in the side of the 45th President of the United States.
The 2016 loser voted not once, but twice, to convict Trump following a Democrat impeachment witch hunt.
But Romney’s vendetta against Trump doesn’t stop with the former President – it extends down to all America First candidates.
In fact, the Utah Senator has refused to endorse the Beehive State’s Senior Republican Senator, Mike Lee.
Lee is facing a 2022 challenge against “independent” Evan McMullin – who is endorsed by Utah’s Democrat Party.
McMullin is a former neoconservative Never-Trump Republican hack, who was part of a scheme to try and steal Utah’s Electoral College votes away from Trump in 2016.
Romney on the fence again
But despite that, and despite caucusing with Lee, Romney isn’t willing to throw his support behind the MAGA candidate in the race.
Romney says he’s friends with both men – which puts McMullin on an even plane with Sen. Lee.
“I don’t think endorsements make any difference in a race to speak of,” Romney said. “People in the race are my friends. I usually try and avoid situations where they’ve been friends. I may endorse and I may not, but I really haven’t given it any thought at this point.”
However, Trump isn’t buying Romney’s flimsy and weak excuses.
And the former President called out Romney on his Truth Social platform.
“Mike Lee is an outstanding Senator who has been abused, in an unprecedented way, by a fellow Republican Senator from his own State, something which rarely has happened in political History,” Trump pointed out. “Such an event would only be understandable if Mike did not perform his duties as a United States Senator, but he has, and he has performed them well. Mitt Romney is the Junior Senator from the Great State of Utah, which I won twice in a landslide, once by beating the candidate, Evan ‘McMuffin’ McMullin, who is currently running against Senator Lee. McMuffin does not represent the values of Utah, but neither, as you will see in two years, does Mitt Romney, who refuses to endorse his fellow Republican Senator, Mike Lee. Mike should now accept that fact and go on to win a race against a man who should have, based on his failed career as a politician, no chance of winning. Mike Lee is outstanding and has my Complete and Total Endorsement. Mitt Romney and Evan McMuffin can count on the fact that they will never have my Endorsement!”
Trump has predicted Romney will lose his Senate seat in 2024 if the failed Presidential candidate decided to run for re-election.
Rumors around the Beltway suggest the Trump team is courting Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes to challenge Romney next election cycle.
For his party, Sen. Lee is encouraging Romney to get onboard or risk Chuck Schumer remaining as Senate Majority Leader.
“He’s [Romney] explained that he’s got two friends in this race,” Sen. Lee said. “When he first told me that, my reaction was, who’s the other friend? And therefore, he wants to remain neutral. Look, I understand it, I respect it. Here’s what’s going on: my opponent Evan McMullin is a Democrat running in disguise. If I’m right on that, he (Romney) needs to get on board, because that’s exactly what he’ll be producing. That’s exactly what this will lead to if Utah gets tricked into electing Evan McMullin, a closeted Democrat, into the United States Senate.”
