Joe Biden served Barack Obama for eight years as his Vice President.
But that doesn’t mean their relationship is all peaches and cream.
And now Barack Obama was forced to confess one awful fact about Joe Biden.
Barack Obama reluctantly comes around to supporting Biden’s re-election campaign
Over the last year, both the Washington Post and Time Magazine reported that Barack Obama sounded the alarm in private meetings with Joe Biden about the decrepit state of his re-election campaign and that Donald Trump would be a far stronger opponent than he and his team thought.
Biden reportedly ignored these entreaties.
Many believed Obama planted these leaks in hopes that Democrats could pick a different candidate for November.
But Joe Biden made it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere.
So now Barack Obama is stuck supporting a candidate he continues to harbor doubts about possessing the ability to win a General Election.
This led to Obama becoming more personally engaged in the campaign, believing that left to his own devices, Biden would botch the campaign.
“This level of engagement illustrates Mr. Obama’s support for Mr. Biden, but also what one of his senior aides characterized as Mr. Obama’s grave concern that Mr. Biden could lose to former President Donald J. Trump. The aide, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said that Mr. Obama has ‘always’ been worried about a Biden loss. And so, the aide added, he is prepared to ‘eke it out’ alongside his former vice president in an election that could come down to slim margins in a handful of states,” the New York Times exclusively reported.
“Perhaps for the first time, the two are on the same page about Mr. Biden’s future. In a sign of things to come, they are to appear together, with former President Bill Clinton, at a major fund-raiser for the Biden campaign at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Thursday,” the Times report continued.
Obama worked against Biden in the 2016 and 2020 elections
Obama has long harbored doubts about Biden’s political acumen.
In 2008, Obama chose Biden as his running mate in large part because he thought his time running for President was over after his second failed campaign.
Obama also thought this meant he wouldn’t have to worry about a running mate looking out for his own political interests.
Biden told Special Counsel Robert Hur that Obama advised him against running for President in 2015 because everyone believed Hillary Clinton was a stronger candidate.
“There were still a lot of people at the time when I got out of the Senate that were encouraging me to run in this period, except the President,” Biden stated. “I’m not — and not a mean thing to say. He just thought that she had a better shot of winning the Presidency than I did.”
In 2020, Obama refused to endorse Biden until all the other candidates dropped out, a fact that hung over Biden’s head the entire campaign.
But Obama knows he now has no choice and is reluctantly backing Biden’s campaign.
