Donald Trump was blindsided when he got this warning about replacing Mitch McConnell

The battle to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate Leader is underway.

The establishment doesn’t want to pass the mantle of leadership to conservatives.

And Donald Trump was blindsided when he got this warning about replacing Mitch McConnell.

The race to succeed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is underway after he announced that he was stepping down from the post in November.

McConnell became the longest-serving Party leader in Senate history after he took over the job in 2007.

With no obvious successor, several big names are in the race to replace him, and several more could throw their hats in the ring.

A battle to replace Mitch McConnell is brewing

Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) – the former number two Senate Republican until he was term-limited as Party Whip five years ago – and John Thune (R-SD) – the current number two Senate Republican – are already in the race.

Both Cornyn and Thune are McConnell lackeys who will keep his brand of RINO establishment leadership going.

Former President Donald Trump frequently clashed with McConnell while he was in office.

His endorsement looms large in the race as he looks for someone he could work with during a potential second term.

Some Republican Senators are urging him to stay out of the race to replace McConnell.

The establishment fears Donald Trump’s endorsement

Trump is reportedly pushing Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) to enter the race for leader.

Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) warned Trump about weighing in on the Senate GOP leadership race during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.

He said his advice to Trump would be to “kind of stay out of the race because it’s a lose-lose situation.”

“Whatever leader is there understands that they’re gonna have to work with President Trump, too, so it’s really not in his best interest to lean in the race at this point,” Mullin added.

Mullin is backing Thune for the job, but he admitted a Trump endorsement could change the race.

“However, if he chooses to do it, it will make a difference,” Mullin stated.

Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) – who is also backing Thune – said that Trump looms large in the leadership race during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.

“The former President will have the opportunity to influence a number of my colleagues,” Rounds said.

Trump endorsed a GOP Primary challenger against Thune in 2022 after calling him a “RINO” and “Mitch’s boy.”

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said that Republicans need to elect a leader who’s going to stand with Trump.

“It’s an imperative,” Tuberville said. “We got to get somebody now who’s going to energize our base all across the country for Senate Republicans and also going to be able to get on that airplane with Trump and stand up at a rally and say, ‘Listen, we need President Trump to win,’ and be very truthful about it.”

The GOP establishment hopes Donald Trump stays out of the Senate leadership race so that they can ensure another terrible RINO takes over for Mitch McConnell.
